The Baby Shoe

While having lunch today, I saw a lone baby shoe, hanging by its laces from a tree branch in the middle of nowhere special. If memory serves me correctly, it looked like it belonged to a toddler, a boy toddler to be exact. I couldn’t help but wonder how it got there. Was he suddenly beamed up and headed home in his little toddler space ship and sucked right out of his little shoe? Maybe he was in the process of traveling through time and space and his shoe simply arrived first. Could be he is locust-like, and has simply outgrown his shoe and left it hanging on the tree. He could have a sister like me who thought it would be great fun to hide mommies little man’s shoe in hopes that he would somehow get in trouble. At the very least, a little baby blister on his toe, nothing too serious or painful ~ just a little something to remind him I was here first and to watch his step ~ literally!

I sat and waited and watched, sipping a lukewarm no-fat latte and chewing on a hangnail. Not sure what I expected ~ a two-year old hobbling with one shoe on, a big throbbing blister on the barefoot, coming down Louetta at high noon in hopes of finding his shoe while gun-slinger showdown music plays in the background? A mother screaming at her oldest (a girl, of course) that she should be ashamed while said daughter rolls her eyes and plots her revenge? Maybe that aforementioned toddler space ship would come looking for a place to land, but that was doubtful in broad daylight I suppose. It is spring, so it could be a little boy shoe hoping to attract a little girl shoe in hopes of becoming a pair and starting a little shoe family of their own.

My previously lukewarm no-fat latte is now stone cold and my hangnail is slightly bleeding. My chicken sandwich is long gone and the aftertaste has me digging in the bottom of my giant bag for a mint, or at the very least, a cough drop. I have waited long enough, and my house isn’t cleaning itself. Maybe, just maybe, if I am really lucky, that little toddler boy is at my house cleaning his little heart out!

Weather Forecast: Rain, Rain, More Rain, Scattered Rain, Heavy Rain, Light Rain, Wet Rain, Big Rain, Little Rain…

The rain has driven the ants inside ~ and a bossier lot I have never seen! I woke up to my entire house redecorated. Jordie’s (my cat ~ who you will hear about quite often and come to love) water bowl has ants doing synchronized swimming, and a food critic is sitting in his food bowl with a little pen and notepad writing his review ~ “The Fancy Feast is indeed a feast fit for a Queen Ant,” so says his review for the ”Fire Ant Rant & Review”.

A couple of the teenage ants are smoking, drinking beer, and playing their music (Adam Ant) entirely too loud! Armed with a jumbo-size can of Raid ~ trigger-finger poised on said nozzle ~ I could not help but overhear the young ant’s dilemma. It seems these rambunctious, cigarette-smoking, beer-drinking boys of bravado are enjoying their last night on earth. As you may know, the males have but one assignment in this life ~ and that is to make the Queen happy! Unfortunately, nothing makes the Queen happier than laughing at her young suitor’s funeral after having her fun. Talking about your tough audience!

Alas ~ I could not help but shed a tear, and yes ~ go on a beer run for these under-age young men! Report me to the authorities if you must ~ I feel all the better for it.
